Inspiring Future Accountants at a Local School Careers Day

Careers Day

At JDH, we believe accountancy is about much more than numbers. It’s about solving problems, thinking creatively and helping people make informed decisions. So, when a local Welsh school invited parents to take part in their very first Careers Day, we couldn’t wait to get involved.

Our very own Kimberley, who is both our Social Media Manager and Bookkeeper, has a daughter at the school. When the opportunity came up to showcase different careers, we thought it would be the perfect chance to introduce children to the world of accountancy in a fun and interactive way.

A Classroom Full of Careers

We were joined by parents from a wide range of professions, including groundwork, aerospace engineering, local government and environmental services. Each career had its own table, giving groups of children the chance to spend time learning about different jobs throughout the day.

When the children arrived at our table, we started with a simple question:

“What do you think an accountant does?”

Surprisingly, only one child already knew!

That made us even more determined to show them that being an accountant is far more exciting than they might imagine.

Accountants Are Business Detectives

Rather than giving a traditional presentation, we transformed the children into business detectives.

Welcome to…

Case #67: Sigma Sundaes

An ice cream shop had run into trouble, and it was the children’s job to figure out why.

Using a set of JDH business clues, they had to decide whether each clue was helping or hurting the business before working together to solve the mystery and come up with ideas to save it.

The children completely embraced the challenge.

They analysed the clues, discussed their ideas with their teammates and weren’t afraid to think outside the box.

One of our favourite suggestions?

“The business should buy a cow because milk prices have doubled!”

It was creative, logical and showed exactly the kind of problem-solving mindset that accountants use every day.

Future Accountants in the Making?

As the sessions went on, something really rewarding happened.

By the end of the activity, several children told us they thought accountancy sounded like a great career.

Changing perceptions in just a short session was incredibly rewarding. We hope we showed them that accountancy isn’t just about spreadsheets and calculators—it’s about helping businesses solve problems, make better decisions and grow.

A Little Something to Take Home

Before each group left, every child received a JDH goodie bag containing a few treats, along with their very own JDH Business Case File so they could continue being business detectives at home.

We wanted them to leave with something that reminded them of what they’d learned and encouraged them to keep asking questions and solving problems.

Our Favourite Moment

While the whole day was fantastic, one moment stood out above everything else.

Several children came back to our table later in the day just to tell us that we had been their favourite session.

There really isn’t a better compliment than that.

It was wonderful to know that we’d managed to make accountancy engaging, interactive and, most importantly, fun.

Looking Ahead

The school considered its first Careers Day a real success, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll be invited back for future events.

Supporting our local community has always been important to us, and if we’ve helped inspire even one future accountant—or simply shown children that there are lots of exciting career paths out there—then we’d call the day a huge success.

A big thank you to the school for inviting us to be part of such a fantastic event. We loved every minute of it, and we can’t wait to do it again.
