Working with a good accountant is one of the most important decisions you make when you are in business. Why? Because running a business can be very stressful. You have so many things to do every day and never enough time. If you can hand over the financial element of your business to someone that you can trust, then you have more time to concentrate on improving your business.
What should you expect from your accountant? We have compiled a list of important things you should consider.
- Good communication. You want to be able to talk to your accountant when you have a problem or question. Can you speak to your accountant or is he / she always too busy? Do they answer the phone / email promptly? Or do you feel ignored and unimportant?
- Good relationship. You should feel you can trust them with the finances and taxes of your business. Do you feel cared for and confident in your accountant’s abilities?
- Good organisational skills. Does your accountant file your accounts and taxes early, so you have plenty of time to prepare for your tax bill? Or is everything rushed and last minute?
- Good ethos. Do you feel you are ‘on the same page’ as your accountant? That is, you have similar values? If so, you will work well together over many years.
- Good value for money. Does your accountant save you money? File on time to avoid penalties? Look for ways to save you tax? (It’s unlikely that a cheap accountant will do these things and may not even be qualified to be representing your business.)
In our experience, it’s important to find the right accountant / clients to work with. Both the accountant and the client have certain expectations in the relationship. If the right accountant is matched with the right client, the relationship will be a long and prosperous one for both parties.
